Authors: Ben Smyth & David Bernhard Title: Ballot secrecy and ballot independence coincide Abstract: In this five minute talk, I will summarise our study of ballot independence for election schemes which is due to appear at ESORICS'13. First, I will motivate the need for ballot independence by revisiting the work of Cortier & Smyth (CSF'11), which demonstrates a flaw in the Helios electronic voting scheme. Secondly, I will consider the desirability of ballot independence with respect to recent debate. Finally, I will show that ballot independence is necessary for ballot secrecy and, moreover, ballot independence is sufficient for ballot secrecy under practical assumptions.
